The Miracle of Growth
From the moment of conception, your baby undergoes an incredible transformation. Understanding each stage of development can help you feel more connected to your growing little one and know what to expect.
First Trimester (Weeks 1-12)
Weeks 1-4: After fertilization, the embryo implants in the uterine wall. The neural tube — which becomes the brain and spinal cord — begins to form.
Weeks 5-8: The heart begins beating around week 5! Tiny buds appear that will become arms and legs. Facial features start forming, including eyes and ears.
Weeks 9-12: By the end of the first trimester, all major organs have begun to form. Your baby is about 3 inches long and weighs nearly an ounce. Fingers and toes are now distinct.
Second Trimester (Weeks 13-26)
Weeks 13-16: Your baby can now make sucking motions and may even suck their thumb! The skeleton is hardening from cartilage to bone.
Weeks 17-20: This is often when you'll feel the first fluttering movements (quickening). By week 20, you're halfway there! Your baby can hear sounds from the outside world.
Weeks 21-26: Your baby's lungs are developing, and they're practicing breathing movements. The eyes can open and close. Fingerprints are now formed!
Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40)
Weeks 27-30: The brain is developing rapidly. Your baby can now distinguish between light and dark. Fat layers are building beneath the skin.
Weeks 31-35: Your baby gains about half a pound per week! The lungs are nearly mature. Most babies move into a head-down position.
Weeks 36-40: Your baby is considered full-term at 39 weeks. The average newborn weighs 6-9 pounds and is 19-21 inches long. They're ready to meet you!
